According the the book Children’s Handkerchiefs, "Elsie the cow", the then recent named "spokescow" for Borden Dairy products became a celebrity when she was featured at the 1939 Worlds fair. Elsie was eventually given a husband named Elmer and a family in 1947, when their young calf, Beauregard, was given his name in a contest that drew millions of entries. As part of an advertising campaign by Borden, various items were created carrying her image, including a series of at least eight different colorful children’s handkerchiefs. All of them seemed to involve Elsie and her new baby Beauregard." The hankies were printed in 2 different sets in four colors, pink, blue , gray and green. The book prices the hankies at between $35-$50 each.
This is one of the vintage Elsie the Cow children’s hankies which was originally from a set called Elsies Baby’s ABC. Graphics show Elsie and Beauregard playing with alphabet wooden blocks. They appear to be a living room with fireplace in the background. There are a row of childs blocks around the edge. Elsie has on a red apron with blue trim. The hankies main colors are red and a jadite green color. The colors are very vibrant.
The hankie measures about 8" square and has a stitched hemline. This hankie is free from tears, or worn areas, or stains. Excellent vintage condition.
